Decide whether SimpleFIN Bridge covers enough institutions to replace the spreadsheet (ADR 0001).

Pass condition

Go if every Account the Household spends from is covered: M&T, Key, Broadview FCU (incl. the Rental's checking), Capital One, Chase, Barclays.
Nice to have: Amherst CU, Vanguard, VOYA, P&A, AssetMark (a quarterly Balance entered by hand is no worse than the spreadsheet).

Also record: how far back transaction history goes, and whether Vanguard reports Holdings.

Steps (human)

  1. Sign up at https://bridge.simplefin.org (~$15/yr) and connect each institution above.
  2. Create a setup token in the Bridge.
  3. Claim it once and save the resulting access URL to server/.env as SIMPLEFIN_ACCESS_URL (git-ignored). The claim command will be documented here once the SimpleFIN client issue lands.
  4. Run the coverage command (documented here when ready) and paste its output as a comment. It prints institution, account name, type, transaction count, oldest transaction date and whether holdings are present. No balances, no payees.
  5. Decide go / no-go and close this issue.

Tooling is ready (#5). Steps, now that they exist:

  1. Sign up at https://bridge.simplefin.org and connect each institution.
  2. In the Bridge, create a setup token.
  3. cd server && npm run simplefin claim <setup-token>: this saves the access URL to server/.env (git-ignored) without printing it.
  4. npm run simplefin coverage, then paste the output here. It shows institution, account, transaction count, oldest transaction and whether holdings are present. No balances, no payees.

Already learned from SimpleFIN's demo:

  • History: each request is capped at 90 days, and SimpleFIN recommends 45 (it may enforce 45 later). So Spending can't be backfilled more than about 3 months from SimpleFIN. Older history would have to come from bank exports, if you want it.
  • Holdings: the protocol does report holdings per account, so the Vanguard question will show up in the "Holdings" column.
  • Account types: SimpleFIN has no account type field, so Group, Holder and FAFSA Class always come from linking (see the linking issue).
